The average age of a vehicle on South Africa’s roads is steadily increasing as relatively fewer new vehicles have been sold over the last five years. Other than new vehicle sales bubbles between
2005 and 2008 and then again between 2014 and 2016, when markets rebounded from the 2008 fiscal crisis, the new vehicle sales market has been constrained, resulting in the rising average age of vehicles.

The average age of passenger vehicles is 10 years and six months, up on just under 10 years in 2017. The average age of light commercial vehicles has risen to 10 years and six months, significantly more than nine years and six months in 2017. Other commercial vehicles have risen from an average of nine years in 2017 to 10 years and two months in 2022.
