From the purposeful single-cab Workhorse to the talented leisure offering, the Double Cab 2.0 VGT 4×4 Lux, there’s a Steed 5 for every application. These sturdy pick-ups are going from strength to strength, selling to value-conscious consumers who want practical vehicles without sacrificing comfort.
DOUBLE CAB Priced from only R207 900 (2,4-litre petrol 4×2 Lux), the Steed 5 represents one of the best value offerings on the local market, irrespective of the derivative being considered. All Steed 5 Double-Cab models feature smart 16-inch wheels, wheelarch extensions, front and rear foglamps and chrome-finish door handles and exterior mirrors.
Nevertheless, the Steed 5 Double Cab retains its siblings’ work ethics and features a double-insulated loadbox with several tie-down hooks and a payload rating of more than a ton. A cab protector is fitted to all models, along with outer tie-down hooks and a rear step bumper.
Befitting its Lux designation, the Steed 5 Double Cab’s interior boasts, among other items, power steering, remote audio controls, radio/CD/MP3 player with USB input, air-conditioning, electric windows and mirrors, heightadjustable steering wheel and leather upholstery.
Safety features include dual front airbags and ABS with EBD. The front seatbelts are heigh-adjustable. Remote central locking and an immobiliser are also part of the deal. The Steed 5 Double Cab is offered with three engine options: a 100kW/20 N.m 2,4-litre petrol, 80kW/300N.m 2,5-litre TCI turbodiesel and the rangetopping 110kW/310N.m 2,0-litre VGT turbodiesel.
Five-speed manual gearboxes (with low-range on 4×4 models) are fitted to 2,4-litre petrol and 2.5 TCI models, while the 2.0 VGT derivatives sport a six-speed manual transmission, also with low-range for the 4×4 models.
SINGLE CAB Mirroring the specification levels of the Double Cab models, the Steed 5 Single Cab is also offered in the Lux grade.
Unlike other single-cab pickups priced at similar levels, the Steed 5 Single Cabs thus offers superior driver comfort thanks to individual bucket seats, power steering, airconditioning, radio/CD/MP3 player with remote audio controls and electric windows and mirrors. Plus dual front airbags and ABS with EBD. Crucially, however, the Steed 5 Single Cab’s large, double-insulated load bay has a payload rating of more than 1,2 tons.
Furthermore, measuring 2 080 x 1 500 x 460mm, the load bay is well-shaped to accommodate big objects. The Steed 5 Single Cab line-up features the same engine/transmission combinations as the Double Cab. 2.2 SERIES GWM’s Workhorse and Double Cab 2.2 MPI models are not tremendously popular without reason.
Powered by a refined 2,2-litre petrol engine with multi-point fuel injection and offering a balance of features that make them attractive to both business and leisure buyers, these Steed 5 models have found thousands of homes in South Africa.
Priced at a low R144 900, the Steed 5 Workhorse is no bare-boned utility vehicle. The cabin features comfortable bucket seats trimmed in durable cloth, air-conditioning, remote central locking and power steering. It boasts the same practical load box as other Steed 5 Single Cab models, as well as a cab protector, mud flaps and front and rear foglamps.
Power comes from a 2,2-litre engine that features multi-point fuel injection. This refined engine delivers 78kW and 190Nm of torque to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The Double Cab 2.2 MPI is priced at R176 900 and boasts, in addition to the above, a radio/CD/MP3 player with USB input, height-adjustable steering wheel, heated rear window, alloy wheels and electric mirror and window adjustment.
PRICING AND BACK-UP The Steed 5 line-up is available through GWM’s extensive dealership network, currently boasting more than 70 outlets and service centres. Every Steed 5 is backed by a comprehensive 3-year/100 000km warranty and 2-year/24-hour roadside assistance.
